NFL Fines Dallas Players After Season‑Opening Loss to Giants

The Dallas Cowboys were fined $33,409 in total after three of their players were found liable for on‑field infractions that helped the New York Giants win the season opener. The penalties were highlighted in the NFL’s weekly accountability report and came as the Cowboys struggled to hold a competitive edge in a 28‑20 defeat at MetLife Stadium.

Late‑Hit Fine for DeMarvion Overshown

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was fined $9,527 for a “late hit” on Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. The hit came with 9:38 remaining in the first quarter and resulted in a 15‑yard unnecessary‑roughness penalty. The Giants capitalized on the yardage, turning the drive into a touchdown that widened their lead early in the game.

Facemask Penalty on Donovan Ezeiruaku

Defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku received an $11,941 fine after grabbing a Giants player’s facemask with 2:10 left in the fourth quarter. The penalty was instrumental in allowing New York to run down the clock and preserve a 28‑20 edge. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said the defensive line “has to stay disciplined,” but the fine signals the league’s ongoing push to curb dangerous play.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct for Javonte Williams

Running back Javonte Williams was fined $11,941 for taunting Giants safety Tyler Nubin after a fourth‑quarter touchdown. Williams, who held the ball toward Nubin after crossing the line of scrimmage, earned a 15‑yard unsportsmanlike‑conduct penalty. The penalty was enforced on the Cowboys’ extra‑point attempt, and kicker Brandon Aubrey missed a 48‑yard conversion, leaving Dallas eight points behind.

After the penalty, Williams told NFL Network’s Jane Slater, “I don’t know why I did it. It’s just out of character. You don’t got to worry about that no more.” He added, “The damage is already done. It’s my fault. I’m better than that. I’m a pro.”

Overall Penalty Totals

Dallas finished the game with nine accepted penalties, while the Giants were assessed 11. The combined 20 penalties between the NFC East rivals reflected a hard‑hitting matchup that tested both teams’ discipline.

The fines are part of the NFL’s accountability efforts, which the league releases each week to highlight player conduct and promote player safety. With the Cowboys beginning their season under a cloud of penalties, the team will likely reassess its approach to discipline in the weeks to follow.
