Rockland Public Library Keeps the Calendar Full Through Mid‑October

For residents of Rockland and the surrounding area, the town’s public library is a hub of creative and educational programming this fall. From crafting workshops to book discussions, the library’s calendar is packed with events that welcome adults, middle‑school students, and families of all ages.

Crafting Community: Upcycling the Fall

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, the library’s Community Room will host the second session of the monthly Crafting Community series at 2 p.m. The event invites anyone, regardless of skill level, to dive into a hands‑on afternoon of upcycled book art. Deputy Library Director Patty King will guide participants through projects that celebrate the autumn season and the upcoming Halloween holiday. The library will supply all necessary materials, but guests are encouraged to bring their own projects or creative ideas. Those interested can call 594‑0310 or email pattyking@rockland.lib.me.us for more information.

Middle School Book Club: A Monthly Reading Adventure

Thursday, Oct. 15, from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., the library’s Board Room will welcome middle‑schoolers in grades 4‑8 to a relaxed book‑talk session. The club, organized by Miss Katie, encourages kids to choose a title from the Maine Student Book Award reading list each month and share a brief discussion with peers the following week. The list—curated by Maine librarians—features a mix of recent fiction and nonfiction across all genres. Books are available on a teal cart in the Children’s Room, and participants are encouraged to pick any that spark their interest.

New members are always welcome; interested parents can RSVP by emailing katie@rockland.lib.me.us. The next meetings will take place on Nov. 18 and Dec. 10, each from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Book Talk with Ron Romano

At 6 p.m. on Oct. 15, the Community Room will host author Ron Romano for an engaging book talk on “Stories from Maine Cemeteries – Lives Cut Short.” Romano will recount the dramatic tales of Mainers whose lives ended abruptly—by lightning, shipwreck, disease, or even murder—while exploring the history and design of 1800s cemetery markers. Attendees can also sign the book, purchase copies, or hear a brief reading of selected passages. The event is open to all, and details can be obtained by contacting Jeannie Sullivan at jeannies@rockland.lib.me.us.

AquaTots: Mini‑Biology for Little Explorers

Friday, Oct. 16, will see the Herring Gut Coastal Science Center bring a touch of the sea into the library. From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., children aged 3‑6 (and their siblings) will enjoy a story‑driven, movement‑filled lesson about sea snails. The program, part of the AquaTots series, includes live sea animal encounters, songs, and a craft activity. No registration is required; simply drop in at the Community Room. The next two AquaTots sessions will be held on Nov. 13 and Dec. 11.

Music Together: Family‑Friendly Musical Fun

The library’s final Music Together event of the year will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m. The 45‑minute, free session—sponsored by First National Bank—welcomes children up to five years old and their caregivers. Music teacher Shannon Burns will lead a mix of circle songs, simple instrument play, and rhythmic activities that encourage family participation. Space is limited and first‑come, first‑served, so families are encouraged to arrive early; sign‑in begins at 10 a.m. at the front desk. The program, part of the Midcoast Music Academy’s community outreach, emphasizes age‑appropriate learning for a range of developmental levels.

How to Get Involved

All events will take place at the Rockland Public Library, located at 80 Union St. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter, a book‑lover, a budding young scientist, or a music‑enthused family, the library’s diverse programming offers something for everyone. For general inquiries, call 594‑0310, or send an email to the library’s general line at info@rockland.lib.me.us. Stay tuned to the library’s website and community bulletin board for updates on upcoming events and any changes to times or dates.

With a full slate of activities spanning the next several weeks, Rockland’s public library remains a vibrant gathering place for lifelong learning and community connection.
