Greenwood resident urges Maine voters to rethink the political pendulum

In a letter published in the January 2026 edition of the Press Herald, Greenwood resident Dwight Mills expressed deep frustration with the state’s electoral outcomes, urging voters to move beyond the familiar “radical” choices offered by Democrats and Republicans.

Mills, who has lived in Greenwood for decades, wrote that each election cycle seems to deliver the same “horrible choices,” forcing voters to pick the “better of the bad candidates.” He noted that Maine has more independent voters than those registered with either of the two major parties, yet the electorate continues to send the state’s representatives to Augusta and Washington, D.C. “One is as bad as the other,” Mills said, emphasizing his weariness with both parties.

The letter went on to state, “Personally, I’m through voting for any Democrat or Republican at the state or national level.” Mills added that “truth and common sense runs back and forth in the middle ground” and called for a new process that would remove the influence of big money from elections. “It’s time to start the process for change and to get the big money out of the elections,” he wrote.

Mills’ comments come as Maine prepares for the 2026 elections, in which the state’s unique blend of independent voters and partisan affiliations continues to shape outcomes. While the letter is decidedly opinionated, it underscores a sentiment shared by many Mainerans who feel that the current political landscape offers limited real options.

The Press Herald has published a series of letters and opinion pieces in the lead‑up to the 2026 cycle. Mills’ letter is one of several that have sparked discussion about the future of Maine politics, the role of money in campaigning, and the possibility of new candidates or reforms that might offer voters clearer choices.
