Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour Under Fire After Macklemore’s Removal; Taylor Swift Remains Quiet

The 2024 Loop Tour, headlined by Ed Sheeran, has been thrust into controversy after the rapper Macklemore was dropped from a show at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The decision, which followed Macklemore’s onstage remarks—he labeled Israel’s actions “genocide” and “apartheid” and chanted “Free Palestine”—was made by the tour’s promoters and venues, according to Sheeran’s own statement released on Friday.

“We did not make that decision,” Sheeran said. “The removal was made by the tour’s promoters and venues, not by me personally.” He added that he remains committed to the tour and to the fans and crew who rely on his performances for income.

Macklemore’s exit came amid pressure from a coalition of pro‑Palestinian and anti‑Israel activists, including the groups StopAntisemitism and the Combat Antisemitism Movement. Singer Pink also called out Macklemore’s performance, sparking further backlash. In the weeks that followed, four of Sheeran’s openers—who had been slated to support the tour—announced they would not perform in solidarity with Macklemore, citing their own opposition to what they called genocide in Gaza.

The controversy also revived memories of Macklemore’s 2014 controversy, when he wore what many saw as an antisemitic costume at a concert. He has said the appearance was unintentional, but the incident has since been cited by critics whenever he speaks out on the Israeli‑Palestinian conflict.

In the midst of the fallout, Taylor Swift, a longtime friend and collaborator of Sheeran’s, has not issued any public comments. The two first met in the music business more than a decade ago, with Sheeran opening for Swift’s 2013 “Red Tour.” Their partnership has produced chart‑topping duets such as “Everything Has Changed” and the 2021 track “Run.” Swift has also been a “surprise guest” on Sheeran’s tour in the past, and the pair have spoken of their shared experience navigating the pressures of fame.

Swift’s public political engagement has been selective. She has endorsed Democratic candidates, such as Kamala Harris, and has championed LGBTQ+ rights, yet she has also been criticized by some for not speaking out on other issues. In 2024, her representatives declined to comment on the current controversy.

Industry observers have offered varied perspectives. David Sams, CEO of Sam’s Global Companies and former head of global marketing at King World, told a news outlet that many performers prefer to stay “in their own lane” to avoid “noise” in a turbulent political climate.

The Loop Tour’s future is still uncertain. While Sheeran has emphasized his intent to keep the shows running, the departure of several supporting acts and the heightened scrutiny of the tour’s lineup may affect its trajectory. For now, the music world watches as the tour navigates the intersection of art, activism, and public opinion.
