Sweetfern Geometer restaurant opens on Portland’s Washington Avenue

Farm-to-table restaurant Sweetfern Geometer opens Saturday on Washington Avenue in the former Bake Maine space.
Chef-owner William Justice launched Sweetfern’s sister business, the bakery and café Mourning Cloak, in an adjacent space in April. “I can’t wait to see how the two operations work together, I think there’s going to be a lot of synergy,” Justice said.
Sweetfern Geometer is a casual fine dining concept. Their à la carte menu includes dishes like smoked mussel carbonara, scallop crudo with warm kielbasa and a burger with ground duck and lamb. Guests can also pick a protein like halibut, duck or tofu, and Justice will prepare a “surprise” family-style meal.
Sweetfern’s bar program features farm-to-table inspired cocktails and natural, organic and biodynamic wines.
The restaurant has 50 seats, including 10 at a wraparound bar by the open kitchen.
Mourning Cloak and Sweetfern Geometer are named for native Maine butterflies and moths. Sweetfern will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 5 p.m-9 p.m. Reservations can be made by email at [email protected].
