Maine Man Charged in Fatal Hit‑and‑Run on Route 1
A 56‑year‑old man from Atkinson, New Hampshire, has been charged with manslaughter and other offenses for a fatal hit‑and‑run that killed a 50‑year‑old resident of Wells, Maine. Police say the incident occurred on Route 1 in March, when the suspect struck Gregory Nolan and left the scene without stopping.
Daniel E. Paul was arrested Sunday morning and taken to the Biddeford Unified Court, where he will face arraignment on January 13, 2027. The charges against Paul include manslaughter, aggravated driving to endanger, and leaving the scene of an accident. According to a press release from the Maine State Police, state law enforcement, the Wells Police Department and several other agencies—including authorities from New Hampshire—have been investigating the crash.
Nolan, who was 50 at the time of the crash, was driving on Route 1 when he was struck by a vehicle that did not stop. The vehicle’s driver fled the scene, prompting a multi‑agency search that ultimately led to Paul’s arrest. The case is being handled by the Biddeford Unified Court system, which will hear the first hearing on January 13, 2027.
Maine officials have indicated that the investigation was conducted in cooperation with New Hampshire authorities, reflecting the cross‑border nature of the incident. The state police released the arrest and charge details as part of an update on the case.
The community in Wells has been shaken by the loss of a local resident in a tragic traffic incident. The upcoming arraignment will determine whether Paul’s case proceeds to trial and the potential penalties associated with the charges he faces.
