Susan Collins seeks to protect Maine youth from smoking, vaping | Letter

During a recent U.S. Senate hearing, Maine’s junior senator pressed the nominee for U.S. Surgeon General on the critical issue of flavored nicotine products and their appeal to youth.
At a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Senator Susan Collins questioned Dr. Nicole Saphier about the public health threat posed by flavored e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches. Collins emphasized the surgeon general’s vital role in communicating the dangers of smoking and vaping to young people.
The issue is particularly relevant in Maine, where advocates like Kaitlyn Quirion of Sanford are paying close attention. According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, approximately 90% of young people who use e-cigarettes or nicotine pouches consume flavored products.
In response to Collins’ questioning, Dr. Saphier acknowledged the vulnerability of adolescents to nicotine. She stated that if confirmed, she would commit to reviewing the scientific evidence and working with the Food and Drug Administration on the matter.
The exchange highlighted the ongoing importance of public discussion about youth nicotine use and the specific role flavored products play in initiating addiction among young people. Senator Collins was thanked by one Maine parent for her focus on the issue during the hearing.
