Susan Collins is not a feminist’s best investment | Letter
In the Aug. 2 Maine Sunday Telegram, Cynthia Dill claims Susan Collins is a feminist’s best investment. Her entire op-ed makes this claim based on Collins’ definition of “woman.” However, denying transgender women their rights is not enough to make Collins a “feminist’s best investment.”
Collins was responsible for advancing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act she knew would make huge cuts and policy changes to Medicaid and would worsen access to family medical care. Pregnant women, infants and young children are not exempt from these cuts. Ads for Collins brag that she obtained $190 million for rural hospitals, but she does not mention this is a fraction of the $2 billion to $3 billion that is being cut over the next decade.
Thousands of Mainers have already lost medical coverage. Collins’ ads do not mention the health impacts of climate change she once championed, but now she backs large-scale domestic oil drilling. Her voting changes on this issue has a direct connection to her accepting $29,000 in donations from the oil and natural gas industry and her many stock investments.
As to her vote for Brett Kavanaugh. I listened to the confirmation hearings and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony. The GOP clearly rushed the investigation into the sexual incident described, but Collins ignored this woman’s credible testimony, just as she chooses to ignore the destruction of immigrant women and children being brutalized by ICE. Requiring the use of body cameras without also enforcing police restrictions is inhumane. Collins is not a feminist’s best investment!
