'Somebody lost their child': Portland residents call for more pedestrian safety initiatives following fatal crash

Three Teens Struck While Walking on Warren Avenue; One Killed, Police Report
Portland Police Department confirmed that three teenagers were hit by a vehicle while walking along Warren Avenue near Interstate 95, an incident that left a 13‑year‑old dead and the other two teens with injuries.
The collision occurred in the early afternoon on a weekday, when the three minors were strolling along the roadway between the I‑95 interchange and the nearby commercial strip. Police said the vehicle was traveling in the wrong lane and struck the teens before skidding off the road.
The youngest victim, a 13‑year‑old boy, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other two teenagers sustained non‑life‑threatening injuries and were treated on the scene before being taken to medical facilities for further evaluation.
“Law enforcement is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” said a spokesperson for the Portland Police Department. “At this time, we have not released any additional details until the investigation is complete.”
The department has requested that anyone who may have observed the vehicle involved or has surveillance footage of the area near Warren Avenue and Interstate 95 come forward. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Portland Police Department’s 911 line or the non‑emergency number at 207‑555‑0199.
The incident has reignited concerns over pedestrian safety in the city’s downtown corridor, where traffic volumes on I‑95 and the surrounding streets remain high. City officials have reiterated that they are reviewing existing traffic control measures, including crosswalk visibility and speed limits, to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The victims’ families have asked for privacy as they grieve the loss and navigate the aftermath. No official statements from the families have yet been released.
Portland Police are continuing their investigation and will update the public as new information becomes available. The department has urged residents to exercise caution while walking near major highways, especially during peak traffic times.
