Thornton Academy Reigns Supreme as Bonny Eagle Holds Second Spot

By Maine News Now Staff – Oct. 25, 2026

In a decisive showdown on Saturday, October 24, Thornton Academy’s Golden Trojans dominated Bonny Eagle’s Scots 49‑14 in Saco, affirming the Trojans’ status as the top team in Maine’s Varsity Maine 11‑man football rankings. The blowout, featuring a record‑tying 14 touchdowns, left Bonny Eagle unchanged at No. 2 despite the loss.

The game, played before a packed Saco High School crowd, showcased Thornton’s offensive firepower. Log LeBlanc, running back for the Trojans, led the charge with a 65‑yard touchdown run that set the tone early. The Trojans’ defense stifled Bonny Eagle, forcing three turnovers and limiting the Scots to 14 points and 204 total yards.

Although the defeat dented Bonny Eagle’s scoring, their position in the Varsity Maine 11‑man poll remained intact. The Scots’ narrow margin of loss prevented any movement in the rankings, keeping them firmly in second place behind the Golden Trojans.

Marshwood Upsets Kennebunk in Class B

In Class B, the Marshwood Hawks faced the Kennebunk Lions, the No. 7 team in the poll, with stakes high for a top‑seed finish in the Southern Division. Marshwood secured a convincing 32‑16 victory, advancing from ninth to seventh in the rankings. The win also propelled Kennebunk out of the poll, with Massabesic Mustangs taking their place at No. 10.

Marshwood’s balanced attack—led by quarterback Eli Turner’s four completions for 210 yards—combined with a stout defense that limited Kennebunk to 16 points. The Hawks’ coach, Alex Ramirez, praised the team’s resilience, noting that “the players stayed focused, and their hard‑earned victory reflects their dedication all season.”

Eight‑Man Rankings Shift

The eight‑man poll also saw shifts. Spruce Mountain Phoenix returned to the top five, reclaiming the No. 5 spot with 45 points, while Old Town Coyotes moved up to fourth place, overtaking Stearns/Schenck. The Yarmouth Clippers and Old Orchard Beach Seagulls remained at the summit, holding first and second places, respectively.
