New Jersey Crash Involving ICE Suspect Spurs Debate Over State’s Sanctuary Policy

A collision on U.S. 130 in North Brunswick last Wednesday left the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen seriously injured and reignited a heated debate over New Jersey’s sanctuary policies. The crash involved an illegal immigrant who, according to federal agents, fled a targeted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation and struck a Tesla before the vehicle came to a stop.

The incident, which occurred in Middlesex County on the heavily trafficked Trenton‑Camden corridor, has become a focal point for Republican critics who argue that the state’s “Trust Directive” – a law signed by Democratic Governor Phil Sherrill that limits local police cooperation with ICE – creates public‑safety risks. Assemblyman Paul Kanitra of Point Pleasant Beach told Fox News Digital that the policy “has led to a long line of traffic incidents that wouldn’t have occurred if New Jersey didn’t have our sanctuary status.” He cited two fatal incidents in his district involving illegal immigrants behind the wheel, including a case in which a driver entered a family’s driveway outside a kosher supermarket and killed a toddler.

“Democrats seem unable to take accountability for their own actions,” Kanitra said, adding that at least two people in his district have been killed in incidents tied to illegal immigrants. “They’re shouting and blaming everyone else, which is somewhat ridiculous.”

ICE officials confirmed that the suspect had been stopped after a verbal warning and a subsequent attempt to remove him from the vehicle. “After repeated verbal warnings and due to officer safety concerns, ICE officers relied on their training and attempted to safely remove the illegal alien from their car,” an ICE spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “The illegal alien then proceeded to flee at a high rate of speed and collided with other vehicles.”

The driver’s evasive maneuver forced him into a head‑on collision with a Tesla driven by the mayor’s wife. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital; her condition is currently listed as “serious.” No other injuries were reported.

The crash has fueled a renewed fight over New Jersey’s limits on cooperation between local police and federal immigration authorities. Republican Senator Mike Testa of Vineland, who represents a portion of the crash’s county, said the incident demonstrates the need for 287(g) interagency agreements that allow local police to work with ICE. “This illegal alien was stopped lawfully by federal authorities, ran through a red light, fleeing federal authorities and unfortunately ran into the mayor of East Brunswick’s wife,” Testa said.

Senator Testa also criticized Democratic lawmakers for their response. “The silence is deafening,” he said. “And when Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman tweets ‘abolish ICE,’ it shows that some Democrats are targeting federal immigration enforcement rather than holding the driver accountable.” Watson Coleman, whose district includes the area where the crash occurred, replied to the incident on X (formerly Twitter) with a single, unelaborated tweet: “Abolish ICE.”

Governor Sherrill’s office defended the trust directive. “We believe that citizenship should have privileges,” Sherrill said in response to calls for stronger enforcement. “I have made this comment many times. We support 287(g) agreements where appropriate, but we must also respect the rights of all residents.” Sherrill’s statement came after Senator Brian Stack, also a Republican, noted that while some Democrats are silent, at least one majority member is calling for laws to be enforced.

East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen, whose wife was injured, has not yet released a statement. North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack III also declined to comment.

The incident comes amid ongoing national debate over sanctuary cities and the role of ICE. Supporters of the trust directive argue that limiting local cooperation protects undocumented immigrants from aggressive federal enforcement, while opponents claim it hampers public safety by preventing local law‑enforcement agencies from working with federal immigration authorities.

The state’s legislature is expected to address the controversy in the coming weeks. As the investigation into the crash continues, the incident will likely remain a flashpoint for the broader conversation about immigration enforcement and local jurisdiction in New Jersey.
