Shark sighting shuts down swimming at Biddeford beaches
A great white shark was spotted near Biddeford beaches Thursday, shutting down swimming in some areas — the latest in a string of shark sightings along Maine’s coast.
Swimming is prohibited between Fortunes Rocks Beach and Biddeford Pool for the rest of the day.
The shark was spotted in the area of Granite Point and Timber Point, Parks and Recreation Waterfront Coordinator Alisha Keezer said.
Lifeguards are flying the purple marine life flag — warn beachgoers about a possible shark — for the rest of the day.
Biddeford Parks and Recreation also cautioned beachgoers to check in with lifeguards about water conditions before entering the ocean, to remain alert and aware of their surroundings, and follow all instructions from lifeguard staff.
The department said it will continue to monitor the waters surrounding Biddeford beaches.
