The headline on the first page of the June 28 Maine Sunday Telegram read like a campaign advertisement for Sen. Susan Collins: “What Collins’ appropriations power has meant for Maine.”
In smaller print, on Page 3, we learned that millions of Americans can no longer afford health insurance after the so-called “big, beautiful bill” ended the Affordable Care Act’s federal subsidies. Although Collins voted against the bill, it would never have been up for a vote without her approval of the procedural motion to advance the legislation to the Senate floor.
Buried on Page B3 of the Maine/New England section, we read about two district court judges that Sen. Collins approved — one in Texas who refused to acknowledge that President Trump cannot serve a third term and an election denier who defended Ohio’s “laws restricting abortion access.”
This election is about more than money for fire stations or libraries. The fate of our nation is at stake. I urge my fellow Mainers to read the fine print and vote to end the Republican majority in the United States Senate.
