Gunfire Reported Near Notre Dame; Police Search for Suspect on Saturday Night

A burst of gunfire was reported at about 7:37 p.m. on Saturday near the University of Notre Dame’s Eddy Street Commons. The incident prompted a rapid police response and an emergency alert from the university’s notification system. The campus has remained on high alert while authorities search the surrounding area for a suspected gunman.

According to the emergency alert, the suspect—a heavy‑set Black male wearing blue shorts, a black shirt, and one white shoe—was last seen moving along the southern edge of the campus. Police have conducted a sweeping search of the area but have not yet located him. “The suspect was last seen along the southern edge of campus as police searched the area,” the alert read.

The shooting took place while the Fighting Irish football team faced Michigan State on the Notre Dame football field. The university instructed spectators inside Notre Dame Stadium to stay there while other students and visitors were asked to shelter in place. In addition, local authorities advised members of the public to avoid the area as the search continued.

One person was injured in the exchange of gunfire and was transported to a hospital. No further details about the injured individual’s condition have been released at this time. Police officials have not confirmed whether the shooting was random or if a motive could be identified.

The initial call to St. Joseph County Dispatch—the local dispatch center for the area—came at approximately 7:37 p.m. The dispatch recorded the gunfire as a “shots fired on Angela Boulevard and Eddy Street,” a report that was later relayed to the university and to the public via the emergency alert system. The alert also urged people away from the vicinity, noting the ongoing search for the suspect.

Notre Dame’s campus safety team, in cooperation with the St. Joseph County Police Department, has maintained a tight perimeter around the campus. The university’s security officials are coordinating with police to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and visitors. While the campus remains on lockdown, the university’s emergency services are working to keep students informed of any developments.

The incident has prompted a broader conversation about campus safety and the presence of firearms on college grounds. Although no other shootings have been reported in the area in recent years, the event underscores the importance of rapid response protocols and clear communication between law enforcement and campus administrators.

At this time, the identity of the suspect remains unknown, and authorities have not issued any statements about a potential motive. Police are encouraging anyone with information about the shooting or the suspect’s whereabouts to contact the St. Joseph County Police Department or the Notre Dame Police Department.

As the search continues, the university has urged all campus residents to remain indoors and follow the instructions of campus safety personnel. Those who are not on campus are advised to avoid the surrounding streets until authorities confirm that the area is safe.
