Sea Dogs fall to Reading, Maine native Cody Bowker

The Reading Fightin Phils scored eight runs in the final two innings to back a strong start by Thornton Academy graduate Cody Bowker and beat the Portland Sea Dogs 11-1 in an Eastern League game on Thursday at Hadlock Field in Portland.

Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony played the second game of his rehab assignment with Portland. He started in left field and hit second, going 0 for 3 with a strikeout. He was replaced after six innings by Ahbram Liendo.

Bowker, who was making his Double-A debut, pitched five innings to earn the win. He allowed a run on two hits, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.

The Fightin Phils took the lead in the first when Bryan Rincon doubled and scored on a single by Raider Tello. They made it 2-0 in the fourth when Bryson Ware reached on a single and advance to second on a throwing error by Portland shortstop Yoeillin Cespedes. Ware scored later in the inning on a fielding error by Cespedes.

Will Turner pulled Portland within a run with a solo home run in the fifth, but Reading broke it up with a run in the seventh (RBI double by Bryan Rincon) and four in the eighth. Ware drove in a run with a bases loaded walk, Luke Ritter hit a two-run single and Nick Biddison an RBI single.

Ware added an RBI single, Luke Ritter waked with the bases loaded, Biddison hit a sac fly and Rincon hit an RBI double in the ninth.
