FALMOUTH — The Scarborough Red Storm opened their season with a decisive 3‑1 victory over the Falmouth Navigators on Friday night, turning early questions about a depleted roster into a confident statement.

The Red Storm, who lost nine starters from the previous year’s Class A championship run, jumped out to a rapid lead. Within the first two minutes, Connor Casey threaded a precise pass to Nsimba Ilunga, who slotted the ball home. A defensive mistake soon gave Scarborough a second goal on an own‑goal, putting the visitors up 2‑0 at the break.

Falmouth fought back after halftime. In the fourth minute of the second half, Jack Verville broke through Scarborough’s back line and found Patrick McCrann, whose finish cut the deficit to 1. The Navigators’ goalkeeper, Wyatt Binnette, recorded 13 saves and reflected on the challenge of playing from behind: “When we had that first goal, we had a lot of momentum.”

Casey restored Scarborough’s two‑goal cushion with a curling strike into the top right corner, leaving the clock with 6 minutes and 34 seconds remaining. The winger later completed his brace, securing the win.

“(Connor’s) as good a passer as anything he does,” said coach Mark Diaz. “Him being unselfish, getting that ball across, and getting on the other end of it was pretty special.” Casey added, “It was a great opener for our season. I think we want to just ride the momentum.”

The performance highlighted several standout contributors. Scarborough’s senior fullback, Alexander Jordan, anchored the defense with speed and well‑placed headers that thwarted multiple Falmouth attacks. On the visitors’ side, freshman midfielder Zach Libonetti held his ground, disrupting passing lanes and distributing the ball effectively.

Statistical snapshot

  • Scarborough: Connor Casey – two goals, one assist; Nsimba Ilunga – one goal; Benjamin Gorham – four saves.
  • Falmouth: Patrick McCrann – one goal; Jack Verville – one assist; Wyatt Binnette – 13 saves.

The win gives Scarborough a positive start as they look to build on the foundation laid by their unbeaten squad from the previous season.
