Gorham tops Varsity Maine volleyball poll after decisive win over Thornton Academy

The Varsity Maine staff released its latest Class A volleyball ranking on Thursday, naming Gorham as the nation's best program. The Rams earned 88 points and seven first‑place votes, securing the No. 1 spot for the second time in the season. Scarborough moved into the top‑two spot after two convincing 3‑1 victories over Deering and Falmouth, while Washington Academy slipped to third after a 3‑2 win over York on Saturday.

The poll reflects all games played up to Tuesday, September 15, and is voted on exclusively by Varsity Maine’s editorial team.

Gorham’s path to the top

Gorham’s success was sealed on Thursday when they defeated former Class A champion Thornton Academy 3‑2. The match was a rematch of last year’s title game and showcased the Rams’ resilience, especially in the final set. The victory gave Gorham a clean sweep of the first‑place votes and a point total that left no doubt about their national standing.

Scarborough’s rise

Scarborough’s surge began with a 3‑1 win over Deering on Tuesday, followed by a 3‑1 victory against Falmouth on Wednesday. Those back‑to‑back wins lifted the Red Storm out of a second‑place tie from the previous poll and placed them at No. 2 with 77 points and one first‑place vote.

Washington Academy’s drop

Washington Academy’s 3‑2 victory over York on Saturday earned them 71 points, but the loss of one first‑place vote pushed the Raiders to third. Their win over York, another Class B rival, was a narrow but important result that kept Washington within striking distance of the top spots.

Cheverus/Waynflete climbs to fourth

The combined Cheverus/Waynflete team jumped from sixth to fourth after a 3‑0 shutout against No. 10 Greely. The shutout added 20 points to their tally, raising their total to 59 and earning them a fourth‑place ranking.

Other teams in the mix

Deering entered the top ten at No. 7 with 29 points, following its loss to Scarborough. Messalonskee, Mount Desert Island, and Greely rounded out the top ten at No. 8, No. 9, and No. 10, respectively. Teams that received votes but did not make the top ten include George Stevens Academy, Falmouth, Massabesic/Sacopee, Gardiner, Lewiston/Lisbon, and Narraguagus.

Looking ahead

With the current rankings set, the teams will look to the upcoming weekend matches for further opportunities to climb the polls. The next round of games is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, and the Varsity Maine staff will update the rankings after those contests.
