Sanford’s Azul Agave Mexican restaurant opening 3 more York County locations

Sanford Mexican restaurant Azul Agave is launching three more locations in York County this year, including one in Ogunquit on Thursday.
Co-owner Luis Valadez said Azul Agave will open at 414 Main St. in Ogunquit, formerly the Food for Thought gastropub. The ownership team also plans to open locations in Wells and Kittery this fall.
Azul Agave first opened in Sanford in May 2025. “Some people might say we’re expanding fast, but I think our product speaks for itself,” Valadez said. “We pride ourselves that we give some of the best service in town here in Sanford, and we want to take that elsewhere.”
The restaurant in Ogunquit will have a different menu from the others, offering items like street food-style tacos and tortas on housemade ciabatta, along with burritos like at other Azul Agave venues. The space has no indoor seating, but 32 seats on the patio. The owners aim to enclose and heat the patio to stay open for the winter.
“But then again, 99% of the businesses in Ogunquit close during the winter, and there’s a reason why,” Valadez said. “We’re going to try to beat the odds, but if it doesn’t happen, we’ll shut down and reopen in April.”
The Ogunquit location will be open seven days from 11 a.m to 10 p.m. Valadez said they plan to expand morning hours to offer breakfast burritos and tortas starting in mid-August.
Sometime this fall, Azul Agave will open in the Wells Plaza in Wells, and then a fourth location at 60 Wallingford Square in Kittery, the space previously occupied by Anneke Jans.
“We didn’t want to miss the opportunity to be in the beautiful town of Kittery, and the location is great, right downtown,” Valadez said. “It’s an up-and-coming area, and we’d love to be a part of it.”
Valadez and his partners closed another of their properties, Union Breakfast and Pizza in Lebanon, this past weekend after seven months in business. Valadez said business there was slow. “I’m not going to lie to you, it was a tough location. I was hoping for it to get better during the summer, but it didn’t perform.”
