Republican National Committee Warns of Early‑Voting Shortfall Ahead of Midterm Elections

Washington, D.C. – Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters cautioned on Sunday that the party faces a “early voter turnout problem” as the nation heads toward Tuesday’s midterm elections. In a briefing to reporters, Gruters stressed that the GOP must mobilize its base to keep control of Congress.

“We need to get our supporters to the polls if we want to maintain our majority in both chambers,” Gruters said. “The early turnout trend is a concern, and we have to act now to counter it.”

The warning comes as the RNC reviews its strategy for the 2024 election cycle. While the party’s 2022 performance saw a sizable turnout, early voting and absentee ballots have surged nationwide, making it harder to predict which voters will show up on Election Day.

Gruters added that the committee is launching outreach efforts aimed at voters who historically vote early but have shown lower participation rates this cycle. The GOP is also working with state parties to streamline absentee ballot requests and ensure that eligible voters receive the information they need.

“The numbers are telling us that if we don’t get a big turnout early, we risk losing the advantage we currently hold,” he noted. “Our message to voters is clear: your vote matters, and we need you to cast it, whether in person or by mail.”

The RNC’s concerns are not without precedent. Early voting has grown dramatically over the past decade, and in 2022 several swing districts saw tight races where absentee ballots played a decisive role. The committee’s emphasis on early turnout reflects an awareness that even small shifts can swing seats in closely contested areas.

Gruters concluded by urging Republican leaders, donors, and volunteers to focus on mobilization campaigns in key states. “It’s a coordinated effort,” he said. “We have to ensure that every supporter’s voice is heard.”

The midterm elections will decide control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, with many states holding key contests. Republican officials across the country are listening to the RNC’s message, preparing to deploy resources to voter outreach, while Democrats are similarly focused on ensuring their base turns out.

As the campaign trail heats up, the GOP’s early‑turnout strategy will likely shape the conversation on the road to the polls, with both parties eyeing the critical days leading up to Tuesday’s voting.
