Rep. Beatty Seeks Hearing Over Kennedy Center Closure
Representative Joyce Beatty, a Democrat from Ohio, has asked a federal judge for an emergency hearing after the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. announced that its main building would be closed to the public. Beatty’s attorneys argue that the closure violates a standing court order that prohibits the center’s board from shutting down its principal facility.
The Kennedy Center, a landmark performing‑arts venue that hosts concerts, operas, and other cultural events, is currently governed by a board that has been subject to a court‑ordered mandate. A federal judge had previously issued an order preventing the board from closing the center’s main hall, citing the need to preserve public access to the space and the cultural services it provides.
According to Beatty’s legal team, the sudden decision to close the building not only undermines the court’s directive but also disrupts the center’s programming and the expectations of patrons, artists, and performers. They contend that the emergency hearing is necessary to halt the closure and enforce the court’s ruling.
The request was made on Wednesday and will be considered by the judge overseeing the case. The outcome could determine whether the Kennedy Center’s main building remains open to visitors and whether the board can proceed with any further shutdowns.
