Remembering Charlie Kirk: Turning Point USA's Andrew Kolvet reflects on conservative group's challenging year

One year ago this week, Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative student organization Turning Point USA, was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University. As the anniversary approaches, his close allies are reflecting on the tragedy and the organization's efforts to carry forward his legacy.

Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for Turning Point USA and a longtime friend of Kirk, described the past year as "the most challenging year of my life." In an interview, he said, "Not only did we live through the tragedy of losing Charlie in such a public, horrific way, but we've had to navigate the months afterwards, and try and pick up the pieces and keep charging forward, because I think there would have been a temptation for anybody to just be mired in grief and go into the fetal position after something like that happened. But we also understood that Charlie meant so much to so many people that we had to push forward and keep going."

Kolvet, who first met Kirk in 2017 and began working for him in 2018, added that he did not expect a wave of conspiracy theories to emerge from the murder, nor the continuous stream of personal stories from people whose lives were impacted by Kirk.

One such story involved an Indiana high school student who serves as president of a Turning Point chapter. While handing out bracelets for the group, she clashed with a mother. The student later told Kolvet, "Charlie taught me how to stand up for myself and I won't back down. And I'm here because I was inspired to get involved by Charlie, his life and his death, and I won't back down."

Kolvet described the student's resolve as an example of a "happy warrior" spirit among young activists, noting their enthusiasm and willingness to stay engaged.

The organization's continuity has been credited largely to Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow, who was appointed chief executive officer following his assassination. Kolvet said that Charlie Kirk had previously indicated that she would lead the group if something happened to him. "She was the one person that could step into that place and have the respect, the love, and the appreciation from all the different parts of the organization," Kolvet said. He added that without her leadership, the group could have unraveled.

Erika Kirk has also encouraged conservative students to remain resilient in the first school year since her husband's death.

Under her leadership, Turning Point USA has reported significant growth. The number of high school chapters, known as Club American, has increased by almost 200 percent, reaching more than 3,500 nationwide, while college chapters exceed 1,500. Church partnerships have also surged from about 4,000 to 12,000. Kolvet praised her performance, stating that Charlie Kirk was "a thousand percent right" in entrusting her with the organization. He noted that Kirk had once believed that 1,000 college chapters would be the maximum, but the group now has over 1,500.

Meanwhile, the legal proceedings against the accused assassin, Tyler Robinson, are moving forward. A judge has kept the possibility of the death penalty on the table as the case heads toward trial.

As the anniversary passes, Kolvet and other leaders say they remain focused on advancing Kirk's legacy, buoyed by the enthusiasm of students and the stability provided by Erika Kirk's stewardship.
