Fossil fuels helped to build our amazing and complex world. Now, however, their time is up. Here are some of the ways burning fossil fuels affect Mainers:
- Pollution, particularly in the form fine particulate matter, is estimated to be responsible for 200,000 deaths yearly in our country and much illness.
- Continued commitment to fossil fuels is putting us way behind China and the rest of the world in the transition to an electrified economy .
- More than 100 lakes and ponds in Maine are now at risk of algae blooms in the summer.
- Maine has had significant damage from floods resulting from heavy storms due to the warmer atmosphere. “Once-in-a-century floods” are happening every decade.
- Tick-borne illnesses are rising exponentially in Maine.
- The ocean level is rising, e.g., there is water in the streets of Portland during king tides.
- More people in the U.S. are dying from heat exposure than ever before.
Renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels and their use is increasing. Nevertheless, the world is burning more fossil fuel than ever before. Americans need to face these facts and act now. Let our senators and representatives know we understand what fossil fuels are doing to our world and the we expect them to act to protect our way of life.
