Scarborough Tops First‑Season Boys Soccer Poll; Gorham and Yarmouth Close Behind

In a vote that sets the tone for Maine’s high‑school soccer season, the Varsity Maine staff ranked the top ten teams for the Class A boys’ competition based on games played through Tuesday, September 8, 2025. Defending champions Scarborough received the most first‑place votes and topped the list with 78 points, followed closely by Gorham and Yarmouth.

Scarborough, the Class A champions from last year, entered the poll as the clear favorites. Yet the voting reflected the expectation that the team could face stiff competition for a second consecutive title. Gorham, which returned most of its roster that reached the Class A South semifinals in 2024, edged out Scarborough in first‑place votes and secured the second spot. The Rams were followed by Yarmouth, a program that has won four of the last five Class B titles despite losing eight starters in a single offseason.

“The competition in Class A North is always intense,” said a Varsity Maine pollster. “The early‑season rankings illustrate that the top teams are close together and that the outcome of the season will likely hinge on how well each squad adapts to the challenge.”

The poll’s top four—Scarborough, Gorham, Yarmouth, and Brunswick—represent a broad spread of the state. Brunswick, Camden Hills, Lewiston and Edward Little round out the mid‑tier of the field, while Oceanside, Greely, and Falmouth complete the list of the top ten teams.

As the season kicks off, high‑school soccer coaches and fans will watch the rankings for clues about the competitive landscape, but the polls also remind everyone that anything can happen on the field. The Red Storm’s triumph in the first half of their September 22, 2025 victory over Windham, and the defensive effort from teams like Gorham and Yarmouth, underscore that the Class A division remains one of the most unpredictable and thrilling in Maine’s high‑school sports scene.
