Red Sox Add Two Key Players in Late‑Season Push
Boston – The Boston Red Sox made a double‑move Sunday night, activating rookie outfielder Roman Anthony and veteran shortstop Trevor Story to their active roster for the final stretch of the American League wild‑card race. The moves were made in a series against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, a game in which the Sox were three games behind the Yankees for the top AL wild‑card spot.
Anthony, 22, had been on the injured list (IL) for 100 games after a sprained right wrist sustained in a May 4 outing against Detroit. Story, 33, had missed 92 games due to a sports hernia. Both players spent the last month on rehabilitation assignments—Anthony at Double‑A Portland and Triple‑A Worcester (7‑for‑25 with two homers and seven RBI in eight games) and Story in 10 games at Worcester (6‑for‑35).
“It’s not like heroes are coming back,” Story said when he was activated. “These guys have put in the work and done the things on the field to get us where we’re at and we’re just coming in to help that.” Anthony echoed the sentiment, adding, “It just starts with seeing the guys. As I got on the bus today seeing the familiar faces that I haven’t seen in a while and just being around these guys. So awesome to see everyone and trying to give everyone a hug.”
In his first game back, Anthony opened the lineups in the leadoff spot as the designated hitter, while Story started at shortstop and batted eighth. He was happy to be in the game, saying, “It’s very unfortunate and obviously you never want to go through that, but I think just to be here now and playing baseball this year and being healthy is all that matters now.”
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy welcomed the return of the two players. “It’s exciting. Obviously they’ve been down a while and have been rehabbing a while. Two guys who mean a lot to us. We’re real excited to have them back.” Tracy also noted that the roster moves came after the team had been dealing with injury setbacks over the past few months.
The roster shuffle made room for Anthony and Story by optioning Mickey Gasper and Anthony Seigler to Worcester following the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Gasper, an outfielder, and Seigler, a catcher, will continue their development in the minors.
Anthony’s path to the big leagues has been uneven. He debuted on June 9, 2025, and posted a .292 batting average with eight homers and 32 RBI before an oblique injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season. He signed an eight‑year, $130 million contract with Boston in August 2025. Story, meanwhile, led the team with 25 homers last season and tied a career high with 157 appearances, having played 163 games in the first three seasons of his six‑year, $140 million contract.
With the addition of Anthony and Story, the Sox hope to close the gap on the Yankees in the wild‑card battle. The team’s performance over the final stretch will determine whether they can secure a postseason berth or if the season will end in disappointment.
