Red Sox acquire catcher Adley Rutschman from Baltimore

The Boston Red Sox made a big splash at the MLB trade deadline, acquiring three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles, according to multiple reports.
The Boston Globe reported the Red Sox will receive Rutschman and catcher Jake Rogers for catcher Carlos Narvaez, pitching prospects Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfield prospect Enddy Azocar and a player to be named.
Rutschman has been on the injured list since July 18 with left wrist inflammation. Rutschman, who is batting .251 with eight home runs and 47 RBI this year, made the All-Star team, as he did in 2023 and 2024. He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in 2022 and ninth in MVP voting in 2023.
If he can return to the field soon, Rutschman is a significant addition for a Boston team that stormed back into the postseason picture with a 15-game winning streak last month. The Red Sox needed catching help, and their offense is also dealing with injuries to Triston Casas, Trevor Story, Roman Anthony and even the recently acquired Curtis Mead.
The Orioles drafted Rutschman with the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, but unlike Bobby Witt Jr., the second pick that year, he hasn’t signed a long-term contract. Rutschman can become a free agent after next season.
Trading him to an AL East rival is a bitter pill for some Baltimore fans. In many ways, he represented both the success and failure of the past few years for the Orioles. He made his debut in 2022 and the team took off, finishing with a winning record that year and then storming to a 101-win campaign in 2023.

Baltimore made the playoffs in 2024, but Rutschman slumped down the stretch and was unable to rebound in 2025, when the Orioles collapsed to a last-place finish. He’s been better this year but has played in only 67 games. Baltimore is 54-58 and entered Monday 2 1/2 games behind the final playoff spot in the American League.
Samuel Basallo, who has 16 homers this season, now becomes Baltimore’s clear No. 1 catcher. However, the 21-year-old Basallo is currently on the injured list as well.
The Orioles acquired Rogers from the Tigers on Thursday.
Narvaez was in his second season with the Red Sox after coming up in the Yankees’ system. He played 118 games in 2025, hitting .241 with 15 home runs and 50 RBI, but struggled this season, hitting just .187 with three homers and 10 RBI in 62 games.

Eyanson is the Red Sox’s No. 2 ranked prospect. The right-handed starting pitcher is 4-0 with a 1.32 ERA in his first season of professional baseball. He started the season with High-A Greenville and was promoted to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs in May. Eyanson made 16 appearances, including 15 starts for Portland.
The right-handed Witherspoon was selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the MLB draft in 2025. Azocar is batting .286 with 18 home runs and 63 RBI at two levels this season.
