Raskin Dismisses Controversy Over Hasan Piker as "Irrelevant Distraction"

A prominent Maryland congressman is pushing back against renewed scrutiny of a controversial left-leaning Twitch streamer's rhetoric, calling the controversy a distraction from more pressing issues facing the country.

Representative Jamie Raskin appeared Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," where host Kristen Welker pressed him on divisions within the Democratic Party regarding Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed's ties to Hasan Piker, a far-left online personality with a massive following.

During the interview, Welker presented Raskin with a clip of Piker stating he would vote "Hamas over Israel every single time." She asked whether there was room within the Democratic coalition for someone with such views.

"I don't even know if Hasan Piker considers himself a Democrat," Raskin responded. "I know he attacked me for campaigning with Callie Barr and Sean McCann and other Democrats in Michigan. I think all of that is an irrelevant distraction."

Raskin was quick to clarify his position on the broader issue. "Obviously, nobody supports Hamas, a terrorist organization which brutally attacked Israel on Oct. 7," he said.

The controversy stems from Raskin's late August campaign appearance alongside El-Sayed in Michigan. Since then, El-Sayed has faced mounting questions about his relationship with Piker, who endorsed him during the Democratic primary and appeared at multiple campaign events.

Piker, who hosts a popular Twitch stream with millions of listeners, has found himself at the center of Democratic Party debates heading into the midterm elections. In an April appearance on "Pod Save America," he reiterated his controversial comparison between Hamas and Israel, stating he considered himself a "harm reduction voter" who would choose Hamas over Israel in every scenario.

Piker has also faced renewed criticism for remarks about American Jews. According to reports, he warned on a livestream that if American Jews continued presenting themselves as "singularly invested in Israel," someone could eventually "take action" against them.

El-Sayed has sought to distance his campaign from some of Piker's statements while stopping short of a full disavowal. In a statement addressing the controversy, he emphasized that Piker was not a spokesman for his campaign. "I want to be crystal clear, nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople," El-Sayed said.

However, El-Sayed has resisted calls to completely sever ties with the streamer. During a recent interview with Stephen A. Smith, the Michigan candidate explained his approach: "What I'm saying is there are 3 million people who listen to Hasan. I want to offer them a pathway into an electoral movement."

The Republican National Committee has seized on the controversy as evidence of broader ideological divisions within the Democratic Party. Natalie Baldassarre, the RNC's national press secretary, issued a statement warning that Piker's growing role in Democratic politics could become a liability heading into November.

"The Democrat Party is being driven off a cliff by socialists who are driving blindfolded while arguing about the view," Baldassarre said. "Unless Democrats hit the brakes, every candidate on the ballot will have to answer for socialists' outrageous beliefs that will bankrupt our country and strip every American of safety, sanity, and freedom."

Within the Democratic caucus, opinions on how to handle Piker remain split. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York dismissed the attention devoted to the streamer as "absolutely ludicrous." Representative Pramila Jayapal of Washington argued that Democrats should engage Piker's audience even when disagreeing with specific comments.

Other Democrats have urged the party to more forcefully distance itself from the controversial online personality.

Fox News Digital reached out to Piker for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
