Proud of Scarborough’s stand against ICE | Letter

Members of the Scarborough Town Council listened as one person after another asked them to pass the proclamation that demands an investigation into the ICE facility in Scarborough. Most asked that they do everything in their power to force ICE out of our community. Due to their presence, we are all at greater risk of injury and death. That was proven on July 13 when ICE gunned down a young father in Biddeford because they didn’t like the way he looked.

We’ve learned that the unqualified, untrained, unvetted (poor excuse of a man) ICE agent responsible for the young  man’s murder is now under federal protection due to national outrage against him. If our own government is protecting the agents who are known to commit violent acts against us, who then can we rely upon to protect us from the Feds? Scarborough residents and supporters from our neighboring communities are first turning to local leaders.

I am proud of my community and proud that the Town Council has publicly stated its support for the immigrant community. This proclamation should be the first step in calling upon our national leaders to do whatever it takes to protect Maine communities from federal violence against us.

Maine’s motto is Dirigo — “I lead.” Scarborough community members and town councilors are showing the way.  It’s a step in the right direction.
