Portland’s Douro named to New York Times list of America’s 50 best restaurants

PORTLAND FORESIDE — A Portland Foreside eatery that blends Portuguese flavors with Maine’s coastal bounty has earned a coveted spot on this year’s New York Times list of the nation’s 50 best restaurants. Douro, which first opened its doors last October, appears in the newspaper’s 2026 roundup as the sole Maine establishment to make the cut.
The Times’ writeup, penned by food critic Melissa Clark, describes Douro as a place where “coastal Portugal meets coastal Maine,” offering dishes such as tinned fish, grilled octopus and salt‑cod croquettes that evoke an Iberian beach vacation. At the same time, the restaurant highlights locally grown vegetables alongside its seafood, reflecting the region’s agricultural strengths.
Douro’s inclusion stands out in a state that has seen mixed results in recent years. Last year, Maine restaurants Sammy’s Deluxe in Rockland and Pilgrim’s Inn in Deer Isle were featured in the Times’ annual selection, but this year Douro is the only representative from the Pine Tree State.
The 2026 list was announced on Tuesday after an extensive evaluation process. The newspaper dispatched 16 reporters and editors to sample meals at 538 restaurants across the country before narrowing the field to the final 50. The rigorous review earned Douro a spot among the nation’s most celebrated dining venues.
In addition to its national recognition, Douro has received a four‑star rating from local reviewers for its Portuguese‑inspired fare. The restaurant’s opening last October introduced Portland Foreside to a menu that pairs traditional Iberian techniques with ingredients sourced from Maine’s waters and fields, creating a distinctive culinary experience that bridges two coastal traditions.
The acclaim from the Times reflects a growing appreciation for restaurants that honor both heritage and locality, positioning Douro as a notable addition to Maine’s dining landscape and a point of pride for the Portland Foreside community.
