Portland Drivers to Face Higher Parking Costs Starting Summer

Beginning July 1, motorists parking in downtown Portland will pay 50 cents more per hour at city meters, and parking enforcement hours will extend into the evening under the city's approved fiscal year 2027 budget.

The changes mean metered parking will now be enforced until 7 p.m., an extension of two hours from the current cutoff. City officials say the adjustments are part of broader budget planning for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Under the new rates, parking that currently costs $1.50 per hour will increase to $2 per hour. Drivers using metered spaces throughout the afternoon and early evening will feel the impact most directly.

The extended enforcement hours are expected to increase parking availability in the downtown core during what are typically high-traffic evening hours for restaurants and entertainment venues. City transportation officials have noted that current daytime restrictions often created confusion for evening visitors unsure of enforcement status.

Parking revenue helps fund city services and infrastructure maintenance. The rate increase is projected to generate additional revenue to support transportation-related expenses included in the FY27 budget.

Business owners in the downtown area have expressed mixed reactions, with some hoping increased turnover will benefit their establishments while others worry about discouraging customer visits.

Motorists are advised to check meter signage carefully after July 1 to avoid citations under the new extended enforcement schedule. The city has indicated that updated parking information and meter instructions will be posted in advance of the July 1 effective date.
