Portland Hearts of Pine’s playoff hopes vanish after late-season slump

Portland, Maine – The Portland Hearts of Pine have been officially knocked out of the USL League One playoff race, a blow that follows a season marked by missed chances and late‑game collapses. With only three matches left on the schedule, the team’s maximum attainable point total of 40 places it 11 points behind the lowest‑seeded playoff spot, which belongs to Fort Wayne FC after their recent win over Corpus Christi.

The Hearts, who finished the regular season 7–12–10, ended with 31 points. That tally leaves them 14th in the 17‑team league and far below the cutoff for the eight teams that advance to the quarterfinals. Even if they were to win all three remaining contests—a feat the franchise has never achieved in a single season—Portland would still finish with 40 points, still short of the 42 points needed to secure the last playoff berth.

The team’s struggles have been largely rooted in an inability to close out games. Portland blew a lead in 10 league matches, surrendering nine goals in the 90th minute or after the regular 90 minutes. Six of those games ended in a draw, and four ended in a loss after Portland had taken the lead. A 2–1 loss at home to Chattanooga on June 13 highlighted the pattern: the Hearts tied the match in the second half only to let a winner slip past in the final minute, costing them 25 potential points.

Despite the on‑field woes, the club has maintained a strong fan base. Fitzpatrick Stadium saw an average attendance of 6,234 over the season, with crowds still flocking to see the team play even in bad weather.

Looking ahead, Portland’s final home match on October 24 will be against Charlotte Independence, a side that is currently one point out of first place. Earlier in the season, the Hearts hosted Athletic Club Boise, a club that announced a move to the USL Championship next year and is now fifth in the standings, and faced Forward Madison on October 17. Neither of these games will change the playoff picture for Portland, which will finish its season outside the postseason bracket.

The loss comes a season after the Hearts’ debut campaign in 2025, when the club finished seventh and lost a penalty‑kick shootout in the final, narrowly missing out on the playoffs. The 2026 season proved less forgiving, as the Hearts’ defensive frailties and late‑game collapses left them too far behind to recover in the final stretch.

While the team’s regular‑season run ends in disappointment, the organization remains optimistic that the lessons learned will help rebuild a stronger squad for the future.
