Police still looking for potentially armed suspects in Springvale

Authorities were still searching a wide swath of the Springvale area for multiple suspects Wednesday, more than a day after police say shots were fired at a Sanford officer during a traffic stop.
Sanford police Maj. Mark Dyer said in a Wednesday afternoon update that police have no significant updates to share about the search.
Police have not released any description or information about the suspects — other than to say they are seeking “two or more” people — but are asking residents to remain alert and report anyone or anything suspicious to 911. If possible, people should avoid the area.
The search area covers locations near several major roads in the area:
- Blanchard Road
- Hanson Ridge Road
- Lebanon Street
- Oak Street
- Smith Road
- Sunset Road
Officers from the Sanford, Berwick, Kennebunk and Old Orchard Beach police departments, the York County Sheriff’s Office and a helicopter crew from the Maine Forest Service have been canvassing the area since Tuesday morning, with the search including door-to-door visits with residents.
The multiagency search began early after someone in a vehicle opened fire on the officer, who had pulled it over for a routine traffic stop near Lebanon and Shaw streets just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, Sanford police said in a public safety alert.

The officer was not hurt, and the driver of the vehicle sped off after the shooting, police said. The vehicle was later found abandoned on a trail off Blanchard Road, Dyer said, adding that officers were obtaining a search warrant for it.
“We understand that the continued uncertainty surrounding this incident is concerning,” police wrote Tuesday afternoon. “Please remain aware of your surroundings. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, do not approach or engage them — move to a safe location and call 911 immediately.”
