Please vote for Susan Collins, Maine’s strongest advocate | Letter

Let’s face it, Maine is a small, rural state. Its tax base contributes less to the federal
government than it receives. The way life should be is not conducive to influencing federal policy. Thus, Maine needs strong advocates in Washington. Susan Collins is our champion.
The U.S. Senate is the most powerful body in determining federal spending. As chair of the Appropriations Committee, she ensures that Maine receives more than its fair share of federal spending. Her work is critical to maintaining strong public services. To fiscal conservatives, this money is going to be spent either way. Why should our senator not ensure it is spent in Maine?
Furthermore, Sen. Collins’ approach is the epitome of professional, considerate representation. Democratic challengers claim to be a path to stopping President Trump. Yet, this is only possible through hardline party policy without any independent thought. These candidates seized the tragic shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford as a campaign opportunity. They protested outside of an incumbent senator’s office! Not only is this behavior inappropriate for any campaign, it contributes to the degradation of American politics. They bemoan our system, while actively contributing to its dysfunction.
Sen. Collins is a direct contrast to today’s divisive, hateful politics. Consistently ranked as the most bipartisan member of Congress, reelecting our senator is a better rebuke than any Democrat. She is the only candidate able to ensure Maine’s continued prosperity while pushing back against the nature of modern politics. Maine must not forfeit this advantage.
