Pedestrians are responsible for road safety too | Letter

Auto accidents involving pedestrians have been prominent in the news in Maine recently. We should certainly do what we can to improve our drivers, but I am also very concerned that pedestrians are not cautious — starting in childhood.

If one follows a school bus at the end of the school day, watch closely. Personally, I have never seen children of any age looking either way before madly dashing across the street. Very dangerous. Are children not being taught to be careful? I remember hearing, “Look both ways before crossing the street,” over and over, so many years ago.

Yes, the driver holds the ultimate responsibility and could lose a license or go to jail. But even though not at fault, the pedestrian could die. We need to teach our children to see every car and never assume cars will see them.
