Janet T. Mills is the 75th governor of Maine, and former District Attorney for Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties.
Nearly eight years ago I took office as the 75th governor of the State of Maine.
Immediately it became clear that I had inherited an office my predecessor left rudderless and dysfunctional.
Paul LePage had decimated the Department of Education, calling teachers “a dime a dozen” and labeling the thousands of men and women who worked for the state “corrupt.”
LePage ruthlessly ignored the state’s obligation to pay its fair share of the costs of education. He left our premier mental health institution broke and beholden to the federal government.
Heartlessly, he had allowed hundreds of people to die from drug overdoses, deprived of the one life-saving medication that could save them and put their lives back on track again.

He denied our towns and cities millions of dollars in revenue sharing funds legally due to them.
LePage refused to follow the will of the people, even as they voted overwhelmingly to fund senior housing and to provide vital healthcare to thousands of citizens.
In dealing with lawmakers and the general public, secrecy, hostility and insults were his daily bread.
He fought with legislators, teachers, public health nurses and sheriffs. Even youngsters who wrote to him became the target of his spite.
LePage ignored the City of Lewiston and blamed the city’s ills on newcomers, even as those newcomers opened new stores and businesses and brought the downtown back to life.
Now Paul LePage wants to represent us in the U.S. Congress. Why?
During this campaign, he has still had nothing good to say about our state or the good people of Lewiston-Auburn. He offers no positive ideas or vision for the future, promising only to vote in lockstep with Donald Trump — as he did as governor.
Paul LePage has failed to make the case for a seat in Congress. Please vote for Matt Dunlap on Nov. 3.
