Paramore’s Hayley Williams Faces Backlash for Political Statements at September Concert

Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams sparked controversy on a September tour stop after declaring that Christian nationalism is “the greatest threat to American democracy.” The remark was made just before she launched into “True Believer,” a track from her upcoming 2025 solo album, Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party.

Williams’ comment came amid a series of outspoken political remarks that have defined her recent performances. She has repeatedly taken a stand against former President Donald Trump, immigration enforcement, and Israel’s military actions in Gaza. During a 2024 iHeartRadio Music Festival set, she warned concertgoers that a Trump win would “harm women, poor Americans, racial minorities and the LGBTQ community” and urged people to vote to preserve democracy. At a 2023 show in Atlantic City, she dismissed supporters of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as “f‑dead” to her. In another set, she shouted “F‑ICE” and “FREE MOTHERF‑PALESTINE!” while performing “Ice in My OJ,” prompting a response from the Department of Homeland Security.

When the clip of the September statement circulated, critics took to the media and social platforms. Lisa Cusack, president of the Don’t L.A. My Burbank PAC, called the remark “incredibly ignorant” and said it ignored Christianity’s historic role in the nation’s founding. “Incredibly ignorant comment considering Christianity is woven into the fabric of every founding document that proscribes Americans' democratic rights,” Cusack said. “Democracy has thrived in Christian nations across the world for a reason. The true threat is this kind of ignorant bigotry.”

A DHS spokesperson addressed Williams’ anti‑ICE outburst, reminding the public of the “service” performed by federal law‑enforcement officers. “America is grateful all the time for our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe,” the spokesperson said. “We suggest Ms. Williams to thank them for their service, not belittle their sacrifice.”

Williams, who has built a reputation for weaving political commentary into her music, has not yet issued a response to the latest criticism. Fox News Digital reached out to her publicist but did not receive a statement at the time of this reporting.

The September concert, part of an ongoing tour, took place in an unspecified venue. The release of her solo single “True Believer” marked the first track from the 2025 album to be performed live. Fans and critics alike have called for a clearer separation between her art and her activist messaging, while others applaud her willingness to use her platform to speak on issues she deems urgent.
