Bonny Eagle Surges to No. 4 in Latest Varsity Maine Softball Poll as Top Spots Hold Firm

Cheverus remains the unquestioned team to beat in Maine high school softball, holding the No. 1 position in the Varsity Maine poll for the entire spring season. The Stags, now 16-0, are one of three teams to finish the regular season without a loss, joining Class D North opponents Penobscot Valley and Katahdin in that exclusive club.

While the top of the rankings stayed static, the middle of the pack saw significant movement in the latest poll, which reflects games played through Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Bonny Eagle's second victory of the season over Gorham, combined with other results across the state, triggered a reshuffling that pushed the Scots up two spots to No. 4 and knocked the previously entrenched Rams out of the top four for the first time this year.

Oxford Hills climbed one position to No. 2 with 65 points, while Medomak Valley also gained a slot, moving to No. 3 with 64 points. Bonny Eagle followed with 55 points in the fourth spot.

Gorham's tumble from No. 2 to No. 5 with 53 points marked the most notable drop in the rankings. The Rams had been a fixture in the upper tier all season before Bonny Eagle's June 2 win disrupted the order.

Westbrook, which has defeated Bonny Eagle twice this season, continued its upward trajectory by rising from seventh to sixth with 47 points. York also gained a position, moving into seventh place with 43 points.

Lewiston proved to be an unfortunate casualty of what could be called the Bonny Eagle effect. The Blue Devils have not lost since May 11, a seven-game stretch that includes a victory over Oxford Hills, yet they slipped from fifth to eighth with 39 points as the reshuffling pushed stronger teams ahead of them.

Gardiner returned to the rankings after a one-week absence, reclaiming the No. 10 position with eight points. Hermon held steady at No. 9 with 13 points.

Four of the top ten teams will enter the postseason as the No. 1 seeds in their respective regions: Cheverus in Class A South, Oxford Hills in Class A North, Medomak Valley in Class B South, and Hermon in Class B North.

Beyond the top ten, several teams received votes but fell short of ranking. Windham led that group with six points, followed by Lake Region with three, and Skowhegan, Monmouth Academy, and Dirigo with two each. Buckfield, South Portland, and Belfast rounded out the also-receiving-votes list with one point apiece.

The poll is compiled through voting by the Varsity Maine staff, with Cheverus earning all nine first-place votes for a perfect total of 90 points.

With the regular season now complete and postseason play on the horizon, the reshuffled rankings set the stage for what promises to be an intriguing tournament across all classes. Cheverus's pursuit of a perfect season, the battle among top-seeded regional powers, and teams like Lewiston looking to prove their recent hot streak deserved more recognition all add intrigue to the postseason picture.
