Ohio Mother of 16 Children Appears in Court on Abuse Charges, Bail Raised to $550,000

Hamden, Ohio – In a courtroom that had already witnessed the release of a 16‑child family from “deplorable” conditions, Elizabeth Siders, 34, was arraigned on Wednesday on four counts of child sexual abuse and 19 counts of child endangerment. The judge deemed her a flight risk and increased her bail from $250,000 to $550,000.

Siders was escorted in an orange jumpsuit and, according to court reporters, repeatedly covered her stomach while sitting before the judge. Her lawyer, Thomas Stolly, said the mother’s long‑standing health issues could be influencing her defense. “We have an individual in Elizabeth who was married at age 15, who has essentially been pregnant for the better part of two decades,” Stolly told local media. “She has not fully gone through any postpartum period, has not been receiving regular medical care that would be appropriate for someone who has had 16, 18 children. I have concerns about what effects those have had on her.” The attorney also asked whether Siders was pregnant again, a question the court did not address publicly.

Siders’ husband, Gary Siders Jr., faces the same charges of sexual abuse against a minor. Although he also pleaded not guilty, a judge last week found him incompetent to stand trial and ordered him and his wife to have no contact. The alleged victim, who was not among the 16 children rescued in July, was reportedly in the Siders’ care when the abuse allegedly occurred.

The charges stem from a July investigation that uncovered the 16 children, whose ages ranged from 17 months to 18 years, living in a house in Hamden, Ohio, that authorities described as a “rolling prison.” Investigators said the children were subjected to “horrific” living conditions. The case was initially triggered by reports of sexual abuse within the extended family, including Brandon Henderson, longtime partner of Gary Siders Jr.’s sister, and Joshua Saunders, a cousin of the children.

Siders’ attorney noted that the mother has never received adequate medical care over the past two decades, a factor the defense hopes will be considered by the court. “We have concerns about what effects those have had on her,” Stolly reiterated, underscoring the complexity of the case.

The judge’s decision to raise bail came after a determination that Siders was a flight risk. The court also issued a no‑contact order for the couple, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations. As the case proceeds, prosecutors will argue that the children’s safety and wellbeing remain paramount, while the defense will emphasize the mother’s health and alleged pregnancy.

The proceedings are set to continue with further hearings scheduled to determine the outcome of the charges and the suitability of continued pre‑trial detention.
