Ogunquit voters support zoning changes to allow for playhouse’s $62M renovation
Ogunquit residents approved zoning changes Tuesday that clear the path for a major expansion of the historic Ogunquit Playhouse, while also electing new town officials in municipal contests.
The zoning update passed 515-259, allowing the playhouse's properties to merge into a single campus under its $62 million renovation plan. A second measure, passed 498-261, redefined local ordinances to permit new amenities such as a mezzanine.
Longtime residents Barbara Berman and Bradford Kenny said the expansion was a critical reason they voted. "That's something that we're really passionate about in town," Kenny remarked.
Christopher Nobile and Heath Ouellette won select board seats with 522 and 439 votes respectively, replacing Chair Michael Collins and member Richard Dolliver. Both Nobile and defeated candidate Peter Kahn currently serve on the budget review committee.
Robert Winchester and Stephen Wilkos took budget review committee seats after earning 505 and 420 votes, besting Patience Prescott-Sundaresan's 307. There were 391 blank ballots and five write-in votes. Winchester currently serves as an alternate on the board.
James Langill was elected trustee of the Ogunquit Sewer District for a three-year term. All newly elected officials will start their terms at the beginning of the next fiscal year.
