New York theater company to stage musical about alleged killer Luigi Mangione

A new Broadway production, titled “Luigi: The Musical,” is slated to open on June 15, 2025, at a theater in Manhattan that is located just a few blocks from the site of the alleged crime that sparked the show’s inspiration. The musical centers on Luigi Mangione, a 28‑year‑old man who is charged with shooting a father of two in broad daylight in 2024 and is also accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson six months later.

The production was created in less than two months by an unnamed creative team. In the script, Mangione is portrayed as a rebellious figure who criticizes institutions such as the healthcare sector, the music industry and cryptocurrency. The show also references other high‑profile figures, including Sean “Diddy” Combs and FTX founder Sam Bankman‑Fried, who are depicted as characters in a fictionalized Brooklyn detention center setting.

A co‑writer for the show said that the musical’s intention is to “expose the big pillars of institutions in society, including the healthcare industry, that are failing in their trust.” In the musical’s lyrics, the stage version of Mangione sings, “Bringing down a tiny part of our broken healthcare system brings me enough happiness to share!” The writers have also stated that the show is a comedy and that it is not meant to trivialize Mangione’s alleged crimes.

The production’s opening night is scheduled for June 15, a week after the originally planned start of Mangione’s state trial on June 8, 2025. A New York judge later delayed the trial until the fall. Despite the scheduling conflict, the show is proceeding as planned.

All five performances scheduled for June 2025 sold out, with audiences reportedly giving the show standing ovations. The musical previously ran in San Francisco last year, where it also sold out a short run of shows. In both venues, audience members have described the experience as “entertaining” and “thought‑provoking.”

The musical’s timing has drawn attention from the local press. The New York Post reported that a campaign director for the newly elected socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed support for Mangione, saying, “I look forward to driving down Mangione Avenue a few decades from now.” Mamdani was elected in 2023, in a race in which many young voters played a key role.

The show’s debut has coincided with ongoing public discussions about the rise of political violence and the use of violent rhetoric in contemporary politics. A 2024 poll found that 41 % of 18‑ to 29‑year‑olds said it is “somewhat” or “completely” acceptable to kill a CEO, a sentiment that was echoed in a 2025 poll, where 40 % of young Americans indicated that political violence could be justified in certain circumstances. These findings have been cited by some commentators as evidence of a growing acceptance of extreme action among certain demographic groups.

“Luigi: The Musical” will run for a limited engagement, with ticket sales already sold out. The production’s creators are promoting the show as a comedic, satirical commentary on contemporary social issues, while critics and observers are divided on whether the musical glorifies or condemns the actions of its subject.
