Scarborough Tragedy: 22‑Year‑Old Student and Athlete Zachary Barry Dies in Connecticut
Scarborough, Maine – The community of Scarborough lost a beloved young man on Sept. 16, 2026, when Zachary Lawrence Barry, 22, died while attending the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. The tragic death of the former Scarborough High School graduate has left friends, family, and teammates stunned and grieving.
A Life of Outdoor Passion and Athletic Prowess
Born in Washington, D.C., on April 28, 2004, Barry grew up in the coastal town of Scarborough. From an early age he was “in constant motion,” a phrase his family uses to describe his love of sports and the outdoors. He played soccer, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, cross country, and track, forging lasting friendships with teammates across these disciplines. In track, his 800‑meter specialty earned him four individual Maine state championships, while his contributions helped Scarborough’s cross‑country and track teams secure seven state titles.
Barry’s love of nature extended beyond the track field. He was an avid camper and hiker, favoring places such as Sugarloaf, Katahdin, Sedona, and even Switzerland. “Nature was meaningful to Zach,” a close friend told the press, “especially frogs.” He spent countless hours on the local golf courses, at Ferry Beach, and at Higgins Beach with friends and family.
Academic and Career Ambitions
After graduating from Scarborough High School in 2022, Barry enrolled at the University of Connecticut as a senior in the Plant Science program, concentrating on turfgrass management. His commitment to the field was evident in his recent internship at Pine Valley Golf Club in Pine Hill, New Jersey, where he worked alongside seasoned professionals, “confirming his passion and excitement about working in golf course management,” a UConn spokesperson noted.
Family and Friends Remember Zach
Barry is survived by his parents, Brian and Kristin Barry, and his younger sister, Gwyneth. He also leaves behind grandparents Lawrence and Marilyn Pierce, grandfather William V. Barry, and a beloved family dog, Finley. The family’s late grandmother, Marilyn Barry, predeceased Zach.
In a statement released by the family, the Barrys expressed deep gratitude for the love, prayers, and support they have received during this “incredibly difficult time.” They added, “Zach will be remembered for his distinctive laugh, silly faces and voices, movie quotes, tenacity, authenticity, and generous spirit.”
Service and Celebration of Life
A service and celebration of life will be held at Halo at the Point, 20 Van Aken Way, Portland, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026. Immediately following the service, a reception will take place at Purpoodock Club, 300 Spurwink Ave., Cape Elizabeth. Friends and neighbors are welcome to attend and share memories of the spirited athlete and friend.
In Memory of Zach
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Scarborough Track and XC Boosters or the Scarborough Land Trust, both of which played a significant role in Zach’s athletic development. Check‑mailable addresses for both organizations are listed on their respective websites.
The sudden loss of Zachary Barry has shocked the town of Scarborough and the wider Maine sports community. His teammates and classmates remember him as a generous, goofy presence on the track, a team player who always showed up for coaches and teammates alike. As the town mourns, they also celebrate a life that, though cut short, was rich in enthusiasm, dedication, and love for the outdoors.
