Obituary: William Graves Funk

William Graves Funk, 80, of South Portland, died at his residence on Sept. 6, 2026. He entered the world on April 5, 1946, in Toledo, Ohio, to parents William C. and Betty Funk. He was remembered as a warm, humorous, and dedicated person, and he was a dear friend to many.
Funk spent his childhood in Barrington, Rhode Island, earning a diploma from Barrington High School in 1964. He later pursued business studies at Johnson & Wales Junior College.
He worked for General Electric for 33 years, selling appliances across New England. He became a familiar and trusted presence in the communities he served, blending his work ethic with a relaxed demeanor.
After retiring, he enrolled in a computer course at Southern Maine Community College, where he developed a passion for technology and became a tech enthusiast. He began volunteering in the South Portland school system's IT department and later founded his own business, which he named “The Mature Geek.” He enjoyed assisting people with computer issues, whether repairing a hard drive or guiding them through new software.
Above all else, Funk valued his family. He found the most happiness in being with his loved ones. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sarah “Sally” Funk; his children, Kristin and her husband Doug, and Eric and his wife Alyssa; his four grandchildren, Megan, Drew, Annie, and Izzie; and his sister, Sally Jane Funk. He was a proud grandfather to Megan, Drew, Annie, and Izzie, and had a special affection for his grand dogs. His family notes that he leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and his uncle, Corporal John R. Graves.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Anna Niegowska and the oncology unit at Northern Light. Over the past year and a half, the exceptional and tender care they provided was of immense comfort to him. In a statement, they wrote, “Funky Bill,” as he was so fondly known, genuinely loved your team and felt profoundly grateful for the comfort and dignity you provided.
A memorial gathering is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with a service at 12 p.m. and a reception to follow. To share memories or send condolences, visit http://www.hobbsfuneralhome.com.
