Thomas E. Stenger Jr., 64, of Sidney, Maine, dies after a four‑year battle with lung cancer

Sidney, Maine – Thomas E. Stenger Jr., a longtime resident of Sidney and former U.S. Army aircraft technician, died on September 10, 2026, at the age of 64, after a four‑plus‑year fight with lung cancer. Stenger’s family says he “always looked for ways to help others,” and he will be remembered for his dedication to service and his love of community.

Stenger was born on August 21, 1962, in Rockland, Maine, to Maxine and Thomas E. Stenger Sr. He turned 18 while completing U.S. Army Basic Training, a milestone that marked the start of a career that would blend technical skill and patriotism. Stenger served in the Gulf War, spending time in Saudi Arabia as an aircraft technician. He earned an Airframe and Power Plant license in 1986 and held an Inspection Authorization license for seven years, making him a highly respected member of the aviation maintenance community.

After his military service, Stenger returned to Maine, where he met Jayne. The couple married on October 4, 1997, and bought their first home in Windham, Maine. Together they welcomed a son, Matthew, on April 30, 1998. The family later moved to Sebago, where they lived for many years before settling in Sidney for the last stretch of Stenger’s life.

Stenger’s wife, Jayne, and son Matthew, now living in Westbrook, say their father was a “selfless person” who always put others first. “He was the kind of person who would give his time and effort to help anyone in need,” said Matthew. “His generosity and willingness to help made a lasting impact on our community.” Stenger is also survived by his older sister Jill and brother‑in‑law Peter King, both of Gorham, and his younger sister Amy Doyle of Auburn. The family also keeps the memory of Stenger’s faithful Golden Retriever, Bella, who brought comfort and companionship to his final years.

Stenger’s friends and neighbors remember him for his warm smile and willingness to volunteer. “I saw him at the local food pantry, and he was there again the next week,” said a neighbor in Sidney. “He was a quiet, steady presence, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand.” A former military colleague recalled his dedication to ensuring safety: “In the Army, he was the go‑to guy for any aircraft maintenance issue. He made sure every part was checked and every plane was safe.”

Stenger’s passing is a loss to the Sidney community and to those who admired his service to country and neighbors alike. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Hobbs Funeral Home, and condolences may be left online at http://www.hobbsfuneralhome.com.

Thomas E. Stenger Jr.’s life, marked by dedication to his country, his family, and his community, will be remembered with gratitude and affection.
