Stephen Fuller Larrabee
KENNEBUNK – Stephen Fuller Larrabee was born Sept. 19, 1939, in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of F. Eliot Larrabee and Marcia Fuller Larrabee. He passed peacefully in his sleep on July 14, 2026.
He is survived by his adoring wife of 60 years, Marka; his daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” M. Larrabee, and her wife, Kathryn Smith, of Manchester, New Hampshire; his son, Jonathan F. Larrabee, and his wife, Heather Larrabee, of Kennebunkport; and their three children: Jackson F. Larrabee, his wife, Jasmine Larrabee, and their daughters, Briella and Madeline, of Kennebunk; Alexander R. Larrabee, his wife, Rebecca, and their son, Eugene, of St. George; and Abigail Larrabee and her partner, Matthew Fontaine, of Kennebunkport.
Stephen began playing classical piano at age four. He gave two solo recitals at the Hartt School of Music by age eleven. He attended Phillips Academy Andover, where he was the Glee Club accompanist before turning his focus to the pipe organ.
Stephen went on to Harvard College, majoring in modern European history, and later earned a Master’s Degree in Teaching from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
In 1963, he began teaching at Wilbraham Academy, where he met Marka Havens Truesdale, a student at Wheelock College and the stepdaughter of Wilbraham’s assistant head. Their courtship grew during his years teaching there, and they married in 1966, following Marka’s graduation.
After Wilbraham, Steve and Marka moved to Milton Academy near Boston, where Beth and Jonathan were born. At Milton, Steve became Head of History and Social Studies and held the Lombard Endowed Chair in Social Sciences. He later earned an MBA from Babson College.
After 14 years at Milton, the family moved to Pomfret School in Connecticut, where Steve served as Chief Financial Officer and Business Manager until his retirement in 2006.
Upon retirement, Steve and Marka moved to Kennebunk, a place dear to his heart, where the family’s history first took root when an ancestor, Stephen Larrabee, settled the area in the early 1700s. This family history inspired Steve to serve on the Historic Preservation Commission, and he was also a longtime volunteer and member of the Board of Trustees of the Brick Store Museum.
Travel was one of Steve and Marka’s greatest shared joys, and together they journeyed to every continent, including Antarctica, gathering stories and friendships along the way. China and Russia drew them back several times, as did the British Isles, France, and Scandinavia, each visit adding to a lifetime of adventures. Fittingly, their final journey together was closer to home: a cruise through the Gulf of Maine to Canada and back.
Steve and Marka had recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, surrounded by their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
There will be no service. Private interment will be held at Hope Cemetery, with a celebration of life to take place at a later date.
