Obituary: Ruth V. Olson

Ruth V. Olson, 88, of Brownfield, passed away peacefully at her home on the morning of Sept. 5, 2026, surrounded by family. The 88‑year‑old was born in Portland on June 27, 1938, and had lived a life marked by devotion to her family, a steady career, and a talent for handmade gifts.
Ruth was pre‑deceased by her parents, William and Irene Flaherty, her brother Ron, her son Gerald, and her husband, John T. Olson Sr. The couple met at the South Portland High School Valentine’s Day dance in February 1956 and were wed on Feb. 16, 1957. Their partnership would last nearly seventy years, producing five children—Jean, Kim, John Jr., Scott, and one other—who were the foundation of a large, loving family.
A lifelong seamstress, Ruth began sewing clothes for her daughters at a young age. Left‑handed, she found it a challenge to teach the right‑handed members of her family, but she persevered, creating handmade items that were prized for their beauty and care. Her creative touch extended beyond the wardrobe; she was known for knitting blankets and other gifts that were treasured by relatives for generations.
Ruth worked at the J.J. Nissen bread factory in Portland, where she was a dedicated member of the office team until her retirement in the late 1990s. In retirement, she and John spent many winters in Florida, enjoying golf, the ocean, and friendships made in the state. Summers were spent back in Maine, where the family would gather for cookouts and holidays. The couple eventually sold their Vero Beach, Florida condo so they could remain close to family during their later years.
Her legacy is reflected in the many people she touched. Survivors include her four children, eight grandchildren—Melissa Boxer, Jennifer Roy, Christopher Clemons, Justin Stilphen, James Stilphen, Jack Olson, Hannah Olson, and Elisabeth Olson—and four great‑grandchildren—Kyla Labbe, Mason Stilphen, Hunter Stilphen, and Katie Emerton—along with her sister, Roslyn Flaherty, and numerous extended family members and friends. To her loved ones, Ruth was simply and affectionately known as “Meme.” She was celebrated for the traditions she helped create, the stories she shared, and the love she poured into everything she did.
Graveside services for Ruth and John will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, where they will rest together with their son Gerald. Arrangements are being handled by the Conroy‑Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland.
