Rosann Paul Wade, 96, Dies After a Life of Teaching, Singing, and Community Service

Newton, Mass. – Rosann Paul Wade, a longtime resident of Newton and a lifelong educator, passed away Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, at the age of 96. The former teacher, musician, and activist is survived by her four children, three grandchildren, stepchildren and a wide circle of family in the Bay Area.

Wade was born on April 1, 1930 in Richmond, California, to Thomas Walter Hutchison and Avanelle Rogers of Pinole. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1950, and spent the early years of her career teaching in California, Missouri, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

In 1951 she married Donald Edward Paul. The couple raised four children together before Wade married Alfred Emerson Wade in 1983. The pair enjoyed traveling, hiking and singing, often performing in the Masterworks Chorale of the Boston area and entertaining their family with piano music at home.

Beyond her love of music, Wade was a passionate advocate for social justice. She worked on numerous political campaigns and was a delegate at the Massachusetts Democratic Convention. She also served as a docent at Bowdoin College, organized book sales at Curtis Memorial Library, and coordinated sing‑alongs for the local Respite Care Program in Brunswick, Maine.

“Rosann’s energy and commitment to people were infectious,” said a former colleague. “She approached every project with enthusiasm and an unwavering sense of service.” Her peers remember her as a mentor who encouraged students and volunteers alike to pursue their passions.

Wade’s children—Chris Edward Duval (Hilo, Hawaii), Lise Ann Paul (Watertown, Massachusetts), David Edward Paul (Matteson, Illinois) and Jean Lorelle Paul Wilson (Marlborough, Connecticut)—share fond memories of their mother’s dedication to education and community. Her grandchildren, Joseph Duval, Lucien Delgutte and Elizabeth Wilson, as well as stepchildren Linda Amero, Thomas Wade and Paula Foley, are also mourners. The Wade family has many relatives in the San Francisco Bay Area who will keep her legacy alive.

A celebration of Wade’s life will be held on Friday, Oct. 3, from 3‑5 p.m. at the Scandinavian Living Center, 206 Waltham Street, Newton. Wade had called the center home for more than nine years, and the ceremony will gather friends and neighbors who cherished her warmth and generosity.

Instead of flowers, Wade’s family requests that donations be made to organizations close to her heart: Bath Brunswick Respite Care (https://www.respite‑care.org/) or Rosie’s Place (https://www.rosiesplace.org/).

Rosann Paul Wade’s life reflected the best of education, music, and civic engagement. Her legacy will endure in the classrooms she shaped, the songs she sang, and the countless people she inspired to give back to their communities.
