Maine Obituary: Roland J. Lamothe, 84, of Gardiner, Dies After Long Illness

Gardiner, Maine – Roland J. Lamothe, a lifelong resident of Gardiner and beloved family patriarch, died at home on September 1, 2026, surrounded by his wife Katherine and family after a prolonged period of declining health. The 84‑year‑old, born September 16, 1941, in Canada, passed away at his Gardiner residence, leaving a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him.

Lamothe’s parents, Arthur J. and Antoinette (Berube) Lamothe, had predeceased him, as had three of his siblings—Claude, George, and Fred DeMerchant. He is survived by three living brothers and sisters: Paul, Mario, Jackie Lamothe and Irene Bourque. His marriage of 65 years to Katherine has endured until his passing. Together they raised three sons: Arthur (married to Kathy) – who is the father of Joel and Matt Soucie, and Kimberlee Hamilton; R. Joseph (married to Sharon) – father of Tony and Erika; and Jan (married to Don). Lamothe also leaves a great‑granddaughter, Sloane Soucie.

“Roland was a gentle, steadfast presence in our community,” said his daughter, Arthur, in a statement to local reporters. “He always put family first, and his kindness will be remembered by all who knew him.” The family has requested privacy during this difficult time, and has requested that condolences, memories and photographs be shared via the Staples Funeral Home website.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, September 13, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner. The private interment will take place at Libby Hill Cemetery, Gardiner. All funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Staples Funeral Home, and the full obituary, along with photographs, can be viewed on their website at http://www.staplesfuneralhome.com.

Lamothe’s life was marked by a steadfast dedication to family and community. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his love of the outdoors, and the countless memories he created with those around him. His passing leaves a lasting legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering devotion.
