Robyn Butler, 76, Dies After Eight‑Year Fight With Cancer

Phippsburg, Maine – Robyn Butler, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday after an eight‑year battle with cancer. The former Navy wife and lifelong educator left a legacy of service in Maine’s Bath community.

Born in 1947, Butler grew up in Delaware where she was a proud cheerleader in high school. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Maryland and later attended the University of North Florida. She completed a master’s in literacy at the University of Maine, a qualification that guided her career as a teacher.

In 1969, Butler met midshipman Tom Butler on a blind date. The couple married the following year in the Naval Academy Chapel and remained together for 56 years. Their 28‑year tenure as a Navy wife was marked by a deep partnership; they met their first child while stationed in Virginia, and the family later settled in Bath, Maine, when the Navy assigned them there in 1985.

While living in Bath, the Butlers joined Grace Episcopal Church, where Robyn served on the vestry and remained a community pillar for decades. She also contributed to Family Focus, a local nonprofit, as a board member. Her teaching career spanned an elementary school in Virginia and a literacy specialist role in Maine, where she helped shape educational programs and mentor young learners.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Butler was an avid gardener, boat enthusiast, traveler, and close friend to many in the area. She often volunteered as a tour guide at the Naval Academy, sharing her knowledge of the institution’s history with visitors.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Tom. Their daughter, Wendy, lives with husband Graham and their children Bennett and Lindsay. Their son, Todd, is married to Florencia; the couple’s children are Lucas, Sebastian, Julian and Mia. Butler’s brothers, Mark (spouse Helen), David (spouse Maria) and sister Dianne also mourn her loss.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday, Oct. 24, at noon, followed by a gathering in the church fellowship hall. A celebration of life is scheduled for the spring at the United States Naval Academy. Condolences may be made online through the Daigle Funeral Home website.

Robyn Butler’s life was defined by her dedication to family, faith and education, leaving an enduring impact on her community and the generations she helped nurture.
