Robert Henry Grenier
PORTLAND – Robert “Bob” Henry Grenier passed away from complications of Parkinson’s disease on Aug. 8, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Born in Lewiston on April 26, 1945, to Antoine and Lea (Perrault) Grenier, he graduated from Lewiston High School in 1964.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1964 to 1967 as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne, and as a combat medic in Company D, 326th Medical Battalion in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966. During his 20 years as a medical service technician with the Air National Guard (1972-1992), he was known by his fellow guardsmen for balancing his signature humor with disciplined professionalism.
In 1969, he married Constance St. Pierre of Augusta, and they raised their family in Bangor. Following his retirement from Pine State Trading in 2005, they moved to Portland. As a self-taught woodworker, Bob shaped rough-sawn hardwoods into Morris chairs for his three children, along with a crib and cradle shared by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He loved saltwater fishing in Gulf Shores, Ala., and ocean kayaking in Stonington. In 2017, he began sailing, and when later referred to as a sailor, he joked, “Well, I have a sailboat.” Remembered for his resilience, he always adapted rather than retreated from challenges, mastering woodworking while pursuing his passion for sailing. Although he threw himself into many interests, he valued loving his wife and raising his family most.
He is survived by his wife, Constance; children Peggy (Scott) Spencer, Michelle Grenier, and Chuck (Rebecca) Grenier; six grandchildren, Robinson, Brie, Clyde, Henry, Liz, and Jolie; two great-granddaughters, Stella and Spencer; and siblings Tony (Pauline) Grenier and Pauline Couture.
A full military service will be held on Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 143 Blue Star Ave. in Augusta, followed by a 5 p.m. reception at Bruno’s Restaurant and Tavern in Portland.
