Obituary: Peter Philip Ames
Peter Philip Ames, a longtime resident of Cumberland, died on September 28, 2026 after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 65.
Ames was born in Portland, where he later attended the University of Maine. After graduation, he joined his family’s electrical contracting firm, Ames Electric, eventually taking the helm in 2008. “He could fix just about anything,” a friend recalled, describing the man’s hands, mind, and determination.
Beyond his work, Ames found great joy in the outdoors. Sebago Lake and the family camp were regular haunts, as were long walks with his dogs, snowmobiling, and a love of baseball. He also cheered on the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox, and cherished time spent with his granddaughter Lucy, who “brought an extraordinary amount of joy” to his life.
Ames was survived by his wife of 41 years, Alice O’Malley Ames, and his children: daughter Brittany Allen (Shane), daughter Lucy, son Matthew (Ashley), and a soon‑to‑be-born daughter. The family also includes his faithful dog Pudge. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alan Ames Sr. and mother Donna, and by his siblings, brother Alan Ames Jr. (Ann) and sister Laurel Webber (Gary). An extended network of relatives and friends also mourns his loss.
A visitation will be held Monday, October 5, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home in Portland. A Christian burial Mass is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, at 11 a.m. in St. Pius Catholic Church, also in Portland. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
