Patricia Ann “Pat” (Davies) Fleshman, 83, Obituary – A Life Dedicated to Teaching, Family, and the Love of Language
Patricia Ann (Davies) “Pat” Fleshman of Freeport, Maine, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026. The 83‑year‑old, who had spent her life cultivating a passion for literature and a devotion to her students and family, left a legacy of kindness, impeccable fashion sense, and a lifelong love of words.
Born on December 4, 1942, in the small town of Yarmouth to William and Mary Davies, Pat grew up with an early fascination for the silver screen. “I used to send for autographed photographs of movie stars,” she recalled, a habit that would eventually lead her to work in a movie theater while a student at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Her academic journey culminated in a degree in English, a foundation that would serve her throughout a varied career.
Pat’s professional life began in the classrooms of Texas and Indiana, where she taught middle‑school English. After a stint as a medical secretary in Bluefield, West Virginia, she returned to teaching, this time in the mountains of Virginia. She and her husband, Walter “Bud” Fleshman, settled in a cabin at the end of a mile‑long gravel drive in Troutdale, a place that became their home for many years. The couple’s home, complete with a serene pond, reflected Pat’s meticulous nature; her signature seasonal décor changes were coordinated with Bud, who served as her patient co‑decorator.
In Virginia, Pat taught at Oak Hill Academy and Grayson County High School, where she left an indelible mark on countless students. At Oak Hill, she was a fervent supporter of the school’s basketball team, cheering from the sidelines and encouraging the athletes as she did her students. At Grayson County, she served as a commencement speaker, a role she cherished for the opportunity to inspire new graduates. Her passion for literature, writing, and grammar was matched only by her caring nature, and she was known as a mentor who went above and beyond in the classroom.
Beyond the chalkboards, Pat’s love of language was evident at home. Her daughter Laura credits her mother’s gentle lessons in spelling and grammar as the cornerstone of her own writing ability. Pat’s tradition of heartfelt thank‑you cards for family and friends, as well as her legendary annual Christmas letter, earned her a reputation as a “wordsmith” in her own right. The local Hallmark store in Bluefield, she said, closed after she left the town—an anecdote that underscores how her presence was felt even in the smallest details.
Pat was a devoted grandmother. She cherished visits with her grandchildren, gifting them books and reading aloud, celebrating birthdays with a phone call and a rendition of “Happy Birthday,” and attending holiday gatherings whenever she could. Her love for family was as vibrant as her wardrobe; she was famous for matching her outfits from head to toe, complete with earrings, necklace, watch, shoes, and sometimes a seasonally appropriate flower tucked into her hair.
Pat was predeceased by her parents, William and Mary, and her brothers William Davies Jr. and James Davies. Her husband, Walter “Bud” Fleshman, also preceded her. She is survived by her sisters Barbara (David) Coleman of Haslet, Texas, and Judy Mattingly of New Castle, Indiana; her children, David Doyle of Croton‑on‑Hudson, New York, and Laura Doyle Sanborn (Greg) of Yarmouth; and her grandchildren Christopher and Jonathan Doyle, Matthew, Evelyn and Benjamin Sanborn. The family also includes Valerie Doyle, mother of Christopher and Jonathan, who will miss her dearly.
Pat’s life was celebrated by the staff of Freeport Place, who were “deeply grateful for their kindness and care.” Her daughter Laura expressed particular gratitude for the help with errands, appointments, visits, and the monthly seasonal décor changes Pat had eagerly anticipated.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Stetson’s Funeral Home and Cremation Care at 12 Federal St., Brunswick. A celebration of Pat’s life will be scheduled at a later date. The family encourages friends and loved ones to share condolences, memories, and photographs on the Stetson’s Funeral Home obituary page at www.stetsonsfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Food Independence, with details available at https://graysonlandcare.org/product/food-independence-donation.
Patricia Ann “Pat” Fleshman’s passing leaves a quiet but profound void. Her legacy, however, lives on in the students she taught, the family she loved, and the countless words she so carefully crafted over a lifetime. She will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to education, her impeccable taste, and a spirit that could turn a simple thank‑you card into a treasured memory.
